The Cartagena Convention Secretariat will participate in a three-day forum in Barbados in June 2022 which will bring together experts from the Caribbean territories of the USA and CARICOM countries. Representatives are expected to share their experiences in building resilience though Nature Based Solutions (NBS) to protect the coastal zones and inland areas of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) from the impacts of extreme events and associated cascading hazards that can result in system and network failures.
The discussions will focus on strategies that can contribute to the capacity for Caribbean countries to meet several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 14 (Life Under Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), as well as the UN Disaster Risk Reduction Sendai Goals. The workshop will also be relevant to both the Paris Agreement goals to combat climate change and the Cartagena Convention.
The workshop will also explore the synergies that can be achieved by applying the concept of the “water-energy-food-climate nexus”.
