UNEA-6 featured a number of select exhibitions and installations showcasing the work of UNEP on multilateral action to tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
Outdoor exhibition: Multilateral Environmental Milestones
Exploring historic moments that reflected the power of multilateralism to safeguard the environment in challenging times, this exhibition presented participants an opportunity to see how these moments have shaped seven decades of environmental stewardship.
Art installation: A seat at the Table
Constructed from 351 tables and chairs, this art installation was designed to form a maze-like structure that symbolizes the complexity of global environmental multilateralism. UNEA-6 participants were invited to find a seat at a table, open the desks and on the form inside, anonymously write their hopes and fears for the future of environmental multilateralism. Some of the text from these forms was shared each day on the digital sign, which was incorporated into a large interactive display.
UNEP exhibition: For People and Planet
This interactive exhibition allowed participants to find out how they can be part of the mission of UNEP on the journey to transforming societies and economies to tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
SINK/RISE exhibition on Small Island Developing States
The SINK / RISE exhibition, by world-renowned photographer Nick Brandt, poignantly captures the profound human toll of the triple planetary crisis, highlighting the stark irony that Small Island Developing States, with minimal carbon emissions, bear the disproportionate brunt of climate change’s consequences. Through the lens of these powerful images, people are implored to recognize the trauma of loss and displacement of humanity and nature as sea levels rise and climate impacts take hold. But this is a future we can change. The world’s impending decisions and actions will determine whether humanity sinks into the depths of an environmental crisis or rises to the occasion and overcomes the greatest existential challenge of our time.
Vanishing Treasures exhibition
An immersive journey to encounter the mountain gorillas of Bwindi’s Impenetrable Forest with UNEP's Vanishing Treasures exhibition and virtual reality experience! This experience was more than just a visual feast—it shed light on the challenges faced by local communities and mountain gorillas in the face of climate change and habitat loss. It showcased the vital efforts of UNEP, UN GRASP, and local partners in Uganda and Rwanda in safeguarding endangered mountain gorillas. The Vanishing Treasures project is leading the way in helping communities adapt to environmental shifts and fostering harmony between humans and gorillas.
#GenerationRestoration Corner: Preventing, halting and reversing loss of nature
Countries have already promised to restore one billion hectares; however, little is known about the progress or quality of this restoration. This exhibition explored how nature is making a comeback around the globe and was inspired by the efforts of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) and UNCCD's G20 Global Land Initiative. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to learn all about the UN World Restoration Flagships, the global leaders in the race to restoration.
Threads of Change textile exhibition
This exhibit by UNEP and the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion showcased groundbreaking innovations in the textile industry. Featuring garments, informative videos, and a "Repair Fair" where participants can take hands-on lessons in weaving, it highlights the One UNEP Textile Initiative and its work. Additionally, daily talks at 5 pm explored topics like fashion communication, empowering artisans, material innovation and policy support for sustainable production, offering expert insights into real-world developments.
Mural: A Planet out of Breath
This mural exhibit, crafted by local artist Bankslave, aimed to emphasize the critical nature of air pollution, stressing its transboundary impact and its link with the triple planetary crisis. Air pollution is an environmental risk not only to human health but also to the health of our planet. Joined up clean air measures can improve air quality, slow global heating, protect ecosystems and deliver a healthier planet for all.
