Due to the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States decided to organize the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in two parts. The first part (UNEA-5.1) was held virtually from Nairobi, Kenya, on 22 and 23 February 2021, with a revised and streamlined agenda that focused on urgent and procedural decisions.
The outcomes from UNEA-5.1 are available here.
Statements from countries, UN agencies, and international organizations are available here.
Substantive matters that require in-depth negotiations, as well as the Ministerial Declaration under the theme of UNEA-5, were deferred to a resumed session of UNEA-5 on 28 February – 2 March 2022 (UNEA-5.2), and would be prepared at a resumed fifth session of the Open-Ended Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR-5.2).
The resumed session (UNEA-5.2) took place in Nairobi, Kenya, on 28 February – 2 March 2022, to consider remaining substantive matters related of the agenda, as well as a Ministerial Declaration under the theme of the Assembly, “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”.
Immediately after UNEA-5.2, the Assembly held a Special Session of the Assembly on 3-4 March 2022, which was devoted to the 50th anniversary of the creation of the UN Environment Programme in 1972 (UNEP@50).
