Focus sur la nature et la biodiversité

La nature est la ligne de vie de l'humanité. La santé, l'alimentation, l'économie et le bien-être de l'homme dépendent de la nature. Pourtant, la nature est en crise. Un million des quelque 8 millions d'espèces de plantes et d'animaux que compte la planète sont menacées d'extinction. Par ailleurs, la dégradation des écosystèmes affecte le bien-être de 40 % de la population mondiale.

Le focus sur la nature et la biodiversité met en lumière des mises à jour provenant de l'ensemble du système des Nations unies, de partenaires et d'autres acteurs, contribuant à attirer l'attention sur la nécessité d'un avenir juste, prospère et durable pour tous.

New policy brief on sustainable food systems in China

The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) initiative has launched the second of eight policy briefs to advocate for a sustainable food systems transition: "Promoting a Sustainable Agriculture and Food Sector in China." The brief explores the integration of ecological and economic strategies to enhance sustainable agriculture in China. It emphasises the importance of eco-friendly farming practices, efficient resource use, and the pivotal role of women in agri-food systems. Adopting a holistic systems-thinking approach, the policy brief aims to inform policies that balance environmental sustainability with economic development, ensuring long-term resilience and well-being for communities and ecosystems.

Biodiversity fund approves eighteen new project preparation grants

The Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) has allocated over $70 million for 18 new projects in 21 countries, including 13 Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. This funding aims to sustain the momentum of the under-one-year-old fund at the Global Environment Facility to restore nature by 2030.

Second Global Meeting of National Focal Points

The Montevideo Environmental Law Programme's mission is to advance environmental rule of law and strengthen global capacities to implement environmental law effectively. The second Global Meeting of National Focal Points for Montevideo Programme V will take place from 3–6 June 2024, at the United Nations Office in Nairobi.

The meeting will be held back-to-back with a global training on the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction, scheduled for Thursday, 6 June 2024.

Nominations open for 2024 Champions of the Earth Award with a focus on land restoration, drought resilience, combating desertification

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) today launched a call for nominations for the annual Champions of the Earth award – the UN’s highest environmental honour, which recognizes outstanding leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector for their transformative impact on the environment.

This year, UNEP encourages nominations of individuals and organizations developing and implementing sustainable policies and solutions to restore land, enhance drought resilience, and combat desertification.
