Urban areas are already home to 50% of the global population and current predictions estimate that by 2050, 70% of the global population will be urban dwellers. This accelerating urban growth is overwhelming urban planning systems resulting in highly stressed infrastructure and at the same time, climate change is increasingly affecting cities' basic services, infrastructure, housing, human livelihoods, and health. What role can nature-based solutions (NbS) play in creating a more sustainable urban future and in addressing climate change impacts while ensuring we leave no one behind?

UNEP, together with partners, is co-organizing a session on Creating sustainable and inclusive urban areas with nature-based solutions at the 17th International Conference on Community-based Adaptation to Climate Change (CBA17). This interactive event aims to discuss how nature-based solutions can contribute to creating a more sustainable and equitable urban future while addressing climate impacts. The session will showcase case studies and lessons on urban Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Nepal, the role of NbS in building resilience in conflict-impacted urban areas in Myanmar, the implementation of NbS to reduce urban flooding in Vietnam, and the interlinkages of NbS in meeting the needs of elderly residents in urban areas in South East Asia and Latin America.
