At the 2021 IUCN World Conservation Congress, IUCN and UNEP are organizing a session on the Raising global ambition on climate change and biodiversity through nature-based solutions (NbS).
The session will cover:
(i) A keynote presentation that provides the latest knowledge on the contribution of nature-based solutions in combating climate change, disaster risk and biodiversity loss
(ii) Expert-led case studies of how countries have included different dimensions of nature-based solutions within their global commitments – both Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs)- under the Paris Agreement
(iii) Panel discussion on how global ambition can be raised further, both through the enhanced incorporation of NbS within global climate commitments, in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and through the efforts of other non-state actors
(iv) Official launch of the UNEP’s Guidelines for Integrating Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) into National Adaptation Plans (NAPs)
The Guidelines aim to guide adaptation practitioners at national and local level on how to take different steps when factoring ecosystems functions and services into countries’ NAP processes and instruments.
The Guidelines detail the multiple benefits as well as the challenges of adopting ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation; what information to collect and generate; what expertise to seek; and which stakeholders to engage for successfully integrating EbA into NAP formulation, implementation and review processes. The Guidelines have been developed under the NAP-Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP), implemented jointly by UNDP and UNEP that supports the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in advancing their NAPs.
- Please note that the colleagues who registered for the Congress can only join this session. As there is a fee to register for the Congress (130 euros), we would like to inform everyone that unfortunately, UNEP can't provide free tickets to join the session. After the launch event at WCC, there will be a link to the Guidelines available in this page.
