The UN Environment Programme has produced a series of case studies on the topic of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to encapsulate the innovative approaches and lessons learned from its extensive portfolio of climate adaptation projects.
Ecosystem-based adaptation harnesses nature-based solutions to address climate challenges, providing win-win outcomes that protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather while offering vital ecological benefits.
Grand Cape Mount County in Western Liberia is home to Lake Piso. This large lake accommodates a sizable mangrove forest that is essential to the lake’s ecosystem and village areas as it provide protection against erosion and absorbs harmful storm surges. One of the biggest advantages of the mangrove forest is its ability to sequester large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and store it underwater in the soil for the next millennia. This capability is essential in the fight against climate change and will become increasingly vital in the years to come.
EPIC-Africa’s growing program partnership with Uganda, co-funded by UN-Habitat and Mbale City, is an exemplary model of the power of collaboration between communities, local governments, and universities that EPIC-N strives to consistently represent. Starting in 1997 when the University of Makerere recognized the pressing need to address development challenges faced by slum dwellers in Mbale city, students became involved in various activities to fill the gaps that a shortage of professional city planners was causing.

Kathmandu, 21 November 2023 – Nepal has today launched its first National Adaptation Plan (NAP), a comprehensive strategy aimed at bolstering the nation's resilience against climate change. The plan, having an estimated cost of USD 47 billion extending to 2050, was unveiled at the National Climate Summit in Kathmandu.
At the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2023, held from the 23-27 October at the Marriott Panama Hotel in Panama City, UNEP and the Global Adaptation Network will be co-organizing and taking part in the following climate adaptation events. Maputo, 22 September 2023 – UN-Habitat and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are strengthening the institutional and technical capacities of local government officials to build climate resilience in the Greater Maputo Area (GMA) of Mozambique.
Co-organized by the Friends of EbA Network (IUCN) and the Global Adaptation Network (UNEP), the 9th EbA Knowledge Day will kick-off with a high-level panel to discuss the importance of accelerating ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) implementation in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Taking place on the 21st September, this year's knowledge day will focus on 4 key tracks:
1. The Global Stocktake
2. The Global Goal On Adaptation
3. Loss & Damage
4. National Adaptation Plans and NDCs
At the Africa Climate Week and Africa Climate Summit 2023, both held next week at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, UNEP and the Global Adaptation Network will be (co-) organizing the following climate adaptation events. 20th June 2023, Kampala – A new $2.9 million initiative has been launched in Uganda to address the growing impacts of climate change by developing a National Adaptation Plan (NAP). Backed by the Green Climate Fund with support from UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the project will be executed by Uganda's National Climate Change Department in the Ministry of Water and Environment.

25 May 2023, Panama City – The Government of Panama has launched a new $3 million-dollar project to increase the climate resilience of the country through the development and implementation of a National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
Global momentum for climate adaptation planning has been growing.
Within a week of the release of the synthesis of the 6th Assessment Report of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which highlights the narrowing window of adaptation options, the 8th staging of the NAP Expo was held in Santiago, Chile, from 27 to 30 March 2023, under the theme “Scaling up Adaptation”.
19 April 2023, Juba – The Government of South Sudan has launched a major USD 9 million-initiative to help communities adapt to climate change by strengthening climate early warning systems and restoring the country’s precious ecosystems in 2 of the 10 states.
