Waste Management

Minamata Online sessions on 5 October 2022. Waste management is a good example of synergies between international treaties. Parties to the Minamata Convention are to use the technical guidelines under the Basel Convention for the environmentally sound management of mercury waste. The guidelines were published in 2015 and updated at Basel Convention COP in June 2022.

Waste Management

The Mercury waste management Area of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership took place both in-person and in an online setting, on 20 September 2022 at 9:30-12:30 (Singapore time).

The main objective of the meeting was to discuss on the Workplans and consider synergies among Working Groups and cooperation with the Global Mercury Partnership Areas.

Cement Industry

The UNEP Global Mercury Partnership and its Area of work on Mercury Releases from the Cement Industry organized an online technical information-sharing session on 23 June 2022.

The event exchanged on current knowledge about best practices to control and reduce emissions of mercury from the cement sector and shared information on available guidance.

Partnership Advisory Group

The twelfth meeting of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership Advisory Group (PAG-12) took place on Friday 11 March, from 12:30 -15:00 CET and Monday 14 March 2022, from 12:00 -15:00 CET, in a virtual setting. The meeting was held under the leadership of  the PAG co-chairs, Rodges Ankrah (Environmental Protection Agency, U.S.), and Teeraporn Wiriwutikorn (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Thailand). Partners were welcome to attend the meeting as observers. The report for the meeting will be made available below as soon as it is finalized.

Chlor-alkali

The Mercury cell chlor-alkali production Area of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership met on 23 February 2022 in an online setting.

Amongst others, the meeting considered an update to the Partnership area’s business plan.

The UNEP Global Mercury Partnership and its Waste Management Area organized an online information-sharing session dedicated to mercury wastes management for the implementation of Article 11 of the Minamata Convention on 15 February 2022.
