The Jordanian Royal Scientific Society hosted a 4-day workshop in Amman from 16-19 July to develop a stakeholder-driven project concept for submission to a climate finance donor, focused on GHG mitigation in the transport sector.
The workshop brought together officials from the Ministries of Environment, Planning, and Local Administration, as well as representatives from the Municipality of Amman, Madaba and Greater Irbid. Representatives from the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund also participated in the event.
The workshop was run in an open and collaborative manner, starting with presentations by experts from UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre on the benefits of structuring the group discussion in terms of a project’s Theory of Change, and a run-through of ‘what is climate finance’ for mitigation projects.
Once the technology focus of the investment proposal was agreed, the participants broke into four working groups to draft structured content for a project concept, presenting their ideas for feedback from the wider group. In this way the proposal was built bottom-up, with technical experts gathering and verifying data during the working sessions to inform calculations on the mitigation potential, investment costs and rates of return.
Participation remained stable and strong throughout the workshop, all attending experts were engaged in the process of designing, revising and validating the project logics and calculations, ensuring that the focus was aligned with the local needs in the transport sector and all relevant national transport, waste management, and energy sector strategies.
The final output of the 4-day working sessions was a fully drafted project concept to for submission to a climate finance donor, including technology-specific calculations for an investment opportunity intended to kick-start a transformation towards a sustainable and reimagined transport sector in Jordan.
