The Action Plan for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Northwest Pacific Region (NOWPAP), launched in September 1994 by the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation is part of the United Nations Environment Regional Seas Programme.

After NOWPAP Member States approved an ambitious work programme for the next 2 years at the 22nd Intergovernmental Meeting in 2017, the Regional Coordinating Unit and Regional Activity Centers (RACs) spent valuable time in planning and preparing work plans for the biennium.

This report provides the first systematic overview on the impacts of major pressures on marine biodiversity in the NOWPAP region, namely: eutrophication, non-indigenous species, and habitat alteration, which are assessed using a DPSIR framework.

This assessment identifies hot spots of oil spill incidents in the NOWPAP region by collecting information on historic spill records, vessel traffic and sources of oil pollution, and conducting statistical analysis using the collected information.

This report is a first step towards developing a new assessment methodology for understanding the impact of certain pressures/threats to marine biodiversity in the NOWPAP region.

This document provides an overview of Ecological Quality Objectives (EcoQOs) in the NOWPAP region, beginning with a history of NOWPAPs approach to EcoQOs and their relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), followed by examples of similar approaches in other Regional Seas programmes and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) of the EU.

Twenty-first Intergovernmental Meeting of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP) renews commitment of member states for strengthening regional cooperation on environmentally sustainable development

The aim of these guidelines are to harmonize and unify the process of preparing and conducting exercises - based on the experience of NOWPAP competent national authorities that have participated in the NOWPAP DELTA Exercise - as well as help improve oil spill response capacity and management of equipment of participating countries during the exercise.
