About environmental accounting
Environmental accounting is an initiative that aims to account for the assets of nature, such as water, forests, energy and ecosystems, among others, in order to demonstrate their importance for the economy and society. The environmental accounting system, on the other hand, provides a structure that allows information on these natural assets to be organized so that they can be linked to economic data. Thus, the report analyzes the environmental accounting system and its role in audits on biodiversity and environmental and sustainability policies.
About the project
UNEP is contributing to strengthening the higher supervisory bodies in Latin America and the Caribbean through two studies: one on economic-environmental accounting and the other on climate finance mapping, with Brazil as a case study. This initiative is supported by the project “Strengthening External Control in the Environmental Area”, an alliance between the German Cooperation through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) of Brazil and the Latin American and Caribbean Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (OLACEFS).
