Kenya does not have policies addressing specific areas or activities for greening its priority sectors of agriculture, manufacturing and tourism. For instance, in the agriculture sector, which accounts for about a quarter of Kenya’s gross national product and 70% of direct and indirect employment, policies are needed to support the adoption of organic standards and the expansion of local, regional and international markets for organic products.
An enabling business environment is critical to supporting efforts to transition to a green economy. This can be achieved by establishing land banks; reducing taxable income for companies and industries that practice sustainable consumption and production; providing green investment subsidies; allowing leniency for companies/industries compliant with cleaner production and sustainable practices; establishing strong deterrent mechanisms for unethical business practices; promoting awareness through sustainable consumption and production awards; harmonizing and reducing the number of business licenses; and expanding the coverage of Huduma government service centres.
In addition to identifying gaps in policies, regulations, laws and standards in the priority sectors to address potential roadblocks to green business development, the policy support component of SWITCH Africa Green supports the formulation of specific policies, regulations and standards and the establishment or strengthening of the institutions needed for resource-efficient and green businesses to emerge and grow.
