A Joint Steering Committee is responsible for making strategic decisions regarding how SWITCH Africa Green is implemented. The committee is made up of representatives from the European Union, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the European Union delegations in the participating countries, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the participating countries themselves and the secretariat of the African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

Each country has a National Technical Coordination Committee (NTCC) that acts as the primary coordinating body. The committee’s role includes assessing needs and defining the SWITCH Africa Green priorities at the national level. Committee membership varies from country to country, but all NTCCs have a core membership consisting of the national programme focal point appointed by the government institution responsible for the programme (the Chair), a representative from the European Union delegation in the country, and representatives from the relevant ministries, especially those responsible for the priority sectors. The committee thus provides a platform for the various ministries to coordinate with each other for programme activities at the national level.

The national institutions guiding programme implementation are:

  • Burkina Faso:

Directorate of Green Economy and Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment, Green Economy and Climate Change

  • Ethiopia:

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission

  • Ghana:

Overall coordination/programme host: Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation

Implementation: Environmental Protection Agency and Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre

  • Kenya:

Ministry of Environment and Forestry

  • Mauritius:

Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change

  • South Africa:

Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries

  • Uganda:

Coordination: Ministry of Water and Environment

Implementation: National Environment Management Authority and Uganda Cleaner Production Centre
