The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) is convening a Meeting of the Mediterranean Network of Law Enforcement Officials relating to MARPOL within the framework of the Barcelona Convention (MENELAS) in Toulon, France, from 29 September 2015 to 1 October 2015, which is partly financed by voluntary contributions from the Government of France and the Government of Malta and possibly others.

By its Decision IG.20/13 (Governance) the 17th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocol has requested the Secretariat of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) of the Barcelona Convention to complete the review of the list of MAP Partners on the basis of the criteria established in Decision 19/6 on “MAP/ Civil society cooperation and partnership”. On the road to the Nineteenth Meeting of the Contracting Parties that will be held in Athens in February 2016, UNEP/MAP Secretariat invites Mediterranean NGOs to be accredited as new MAP Partners.

Turkey leads as the first Mediterranean country to dispose of its Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) contaminated equipment in collaboration with UNEP/MAP. Athens – 27 April 2015: Turkey has started packing and shipping to France its transformers contaminated with PCBs, from electricity and industrial companies. The process of decontamination and disposal of the toxic substance in France is expected to last from 10 to 12 weeks, at the end of which, Turkey would have disposed of 634 tons of PCBs.

The National Action Plans (NAPs) update has advanced significantly in the second half of 2014 with completion of procedural and methodological frameworks to support and guide the process at regional and national levels. The process is expected to intensify in the first half of 2015 to lead to a delivery of updated NAPs by the last trimester of the year for submission to and endorsement by the next Conference of Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP 19).
