In Peru, transport is a major contributor to GHG emissions due to years of car-centric policies and inadequate planning. Recently, efforts have focused on creating an integrated transport system, promoting sustainable modes, and embracing electromobility.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Political commitment and funding are needed to prioritize sustainable transport projects, and a broader perspective that includes gender and vulnerable groups is essential for effective planning. Shifting the cultural mindset around car use is crucial. Digitalization has the potential to be a game-changer, reducing emissions and increasing accessibility for all users.
Lima-Callao
The Urban Transport Authority of Lima aims to lead the shift from car-centric to sustainable transportation through a multidisciplinary approach, enhancing the quality of life, health, safety, and labour integration
ACCESS Activities
- Pilots and implementation
Lima-Callao: Increase technology capabilities in the transport sector, for data collection and data analysis. This will result in indicators such as GHG reductions, energy savings, accessibility, useful to develop an information system to monitor mobility patterns emphasising vulnerable groups and gender.
Arequipa: Guide renewal public transport fleet by using a digital tool that allows decision-makers and operators to consider the benefits of using electric vehicles instead of diesel conventional vehicles.
