Strengthening of national capacities in the environmentally sound management of emerging pollutants and other dangerous substances in Argentina.
Technical Highlights
2023 - Argentina prioritizes sound management of agrochemicals and emerging pollutants
Project Summary
The main objective of this project is to strengthen the institutional capacities for improving the sound management of chemicals and waste by generating installed capacity in the national environmental authority in order to promote the effective implementation of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements on chemicals and waste and the Strategic Approach for International Chemicals Management, taking into account national needs and priorities involving contaminants of emerging concern, lithium, lead, agrochemicals and other dangerous pollutants.
These emerging policy issues are recently being addressed by the National Environmental Authority to prevent pollution and enhance sustainable development. The Project will provide inputs to fill the existing information and regulation gaps. To do this, it will promote cooperation between governmental bodies, industry, academic and civil society organizations involved in the field. The project will generate information about emerging concerns such as pharmaceutical products, lithium, lead, agrochemicals, and other dangerous pollutants, and contribute to understanding their effects on the environment and species. The technical reports will provide information for future monitoring and periodic reporting and will allow the development of new regulations to increase the overall national capacities on environmental protection and risk management of hazardous chemicals and wastes.
Project Objectives
The Project will improve the work under the MAyDS, enhancing the sustainable capacity of the government for the sound management of chemicals and waste, especially on emerging policy issues, based on the following aspects:
- Strengthen the National Directorate of Chemicals to enhance the compliance of the international agreements related to chemicals and waste management ratified by Argentina.
- Provide the means to identify and address the lack of specific information and/or capacity in several areas and topics on emerging environmental policy issues.
- Generation and improvement of mechanisms to systematized information to obtain the necessary data to expedite the submission of national reports to the conventions and compliance with the obligations under them.
- dentification and development of national capacities for the management of new emerging issues such as contaminants of emerging concern, lithium, lead, agrochemicals and other dangerous pollutants.
- Development and improvement of efficient mechanisms to further develop and streamline cooperation and coordination for interdisciplinary and interjurisdictional exchange of information that will allow the active participation of all relevant partners and stakeholders.
