2019 - Bolivia takes steps to protect its rich natural landscapes and strengthen environmental practices

Project Summary

The project aims to promote environmentally sound management of chemical substances and hazardous waste by generating capacities in the National Competent Environmental Authority (AACN-NCEA) i.e. the Vice-Ministry of Environment, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Forest Management and Development to promote adequate implementation of the Basel, Stockholm, Rotterdam Conventions and the Minamata Convention and the Strategic Approach for the International Chemicals Management (SAICM). The project aims to implement, strengthen and make sustainable the work of the Chemicals and Waste Unit.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for sound management of chemicals and waste by:

  • Strengthening the institutional capacity of Vice-Ministry of Environment, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Forest Management and Development and the creation of the Chemicals and Waste Unit;
  • Enhancing the implementation and fulfilment of the country’s commitments to the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm Conventions and the Minamata Convention;
  • Improving the current environmental legislation and policy regulations necessary for chemical substances and hazardous waste,
  • Developing programs for the management of chemical substances and hazardous wastes related to the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management;
  • Including a gender approach in the field of environmentally sound management of chemicals and hazardous waste; and
  • Developing a risk assessment and management program for the reduction of chemical disasters.
