World Environment Day, celebrated each year on June 5th, is a global initiative to raise awareness about environmental challenges and promote action for the environment. This year, 2023, the focus of World Environment Day is the fight against plastic pollution.
World Environment Day 2023 aims to lead and coordinate activities at global, regional and local levels to combat plastic pollution. It raises awareness of the negative impact of plastics on the environment and encourages changes in consumption and production patterns through awareness campaigns, initiatives to reduce single-use plastics, promotion of the circular economy and collaboration with various sectors.
As a part of the United Nations system, we must lead by example to combat the triple global climate change crisis, biodiversity loss and pollution. We have already made progress, for instance, in offsetting carbon emissions from our travels. Today, it is up to us to tackle plastic pollution as well.
