The GEO Head and IPCC Secretariat Head discussed their respective activities and how these could be linked to the 'meaningful science-policy input' for Stockholm +50 that is referenced in UNEP/EA.4/RES.23.
Main Outcomes from the discussion included:
- IPCC is holding a scoping meeting soon in Singapore to begin preparing a synthesis report of the 3 special reports that were recently published. The purpose is to inform Member States and decision-makers of the collective and comparable findings from these three reports so that countries are informed about what it would mean to take action to achieve a 2 degree or 1.5 degree world.
- The Adhoc Global Assessment Dialogue effort is also producing a synthesis report of 7 major global assessments that have been published over the last year. The purpose is similar to the IPCC synthesis report.
- The Science Division, along with the Governance Affairs Division of UNEP is also undertaking some preliminary work on the 'meaningful science-policy input' that is requested in resolution 23. This input would support the commemoration of teh 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Environment.
- There are links across each of these products and proper planning and consultation should be undertaken to ensure a scientifically credible product that is viewed as legitimate by Member States is produced.
