While on a country visit to Ghana, UNEP Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, met the Africa Major Groups and Stakeholders with stronger presence of the local stakeholders from Ghana. The meeting took place at the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office on 17 of May 2023 with attendance of 30 stakeholder representatives physically attending the meeting and another 25 representatives joining the meeting virtually via teams.
Charles Abani, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Mr. Frank Turyatunga, Africa Office Director, opened the meeting by stressing the importance of the civil society engagement in UN work in Ghana and Africa at large. They reiterated the openness of UN towards engaging with Civil society organization and the need of the civil society to grab this opportunity and work with the UN to achieve the SDGs.
The DED discussion with the major groups revolved around UNEP’s engagement with Civil Society to support action on the three planetary crisis and UNEP’s support to civil society. She stressed better organizations among the stakeholders to better utilize the spaces and opportunities within UNEP and UNEA processes.
