The 3rd Global Conference of the Sustainable Food Systems programme of the One Planet network, taking place from November 25 to December 3, will bring together thought leaders, policymakers, civil society, farmers, business, academia, media, donors and people working on different aspects of food systems from around the world to build a common vision for the profound transformation needed towards healthier, more sustainable and equitable food systems.

The conference, which has been independently organised by UN One Planet Network, seeks to serve as a major milestone and contribution on the road to the UN Food Systems Summit, the UN Secretary General’s ground-breaking summit on food systems taking place in New York during the UN General Assembly, with a Pre-Summit taking place in the summer of 2021 in Rome. Dr. Agnes Kalibata, the UN Secretary-General-appointed Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit, will speak in the opening panel discussion of the conference, as will chairs of the Food Systems Summit ‘Action Tracks’ on science, nutrition, resilience and production.

The development of sustainable food systems is central to achieving all of the SDGs. In addition to their significance for more responsible production and consumption (SDG12), sustainable food systems contribute to poverty reduction (SDG1), ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition (SDG2), improving health and wellbeing (SDG3), promoting decent work and employment (SDG8), life below water (SDG14), protecting life on land (SDG15), climate action (SDG12) amongst others.

Objectives and outcomes

Following the San José Call to Action of the SFS Programme’s 2nd conference, the objectives of this meeting are:

  • To strengthen the common vision that suggests that only through inclusive multi-stakeholder collaboration will we be able to achieve the profound transformation, through a set of key actions and implementation mechanisms, that our food systems require;
  • To provide a platform for structured discussion around the science underlying global efforts to characterize and assess progress towards more sustainable food systems;
  • and, overall, to raise the political importance of sustainable food systems among public and private sector leaders.

The expected outcomes of the conference are:

  • To provide science-based recommendations on the range of actions that can advance food systems transformation within the priority areas identified in the outcome of the 2nd global conference, in contribution to the Action Tracks of the Food Systems Summit 2021; and
  • To provide recommendations that can help define the implementation mechanisms (including accountability mechanisms) for such recommended actions.
