UNEP-CITA Conference on Improving Africa’s Vehicle Fleet

Nairobi hosted a groundbreaking event aimed at tackling two of Africa’s pressing issues: road safety challenges and improving the quality of vehicles across the continent. CITA, the International Motor Vehicle Inspection Committee, is a global association of authorities and authorized companies active in the field of vehicle compliance. The CITA AFRICA Conference 2024, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), gathered regional and international experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to find actionable solutions to improve the African vehicle fleet. The theme of the conference was "Working together to improve the African vehicle fleet”.

With road traffic deaths in Africa rising at an alarming rate—four times higher than Europe—alongside rising vehicle emissions, the conference came at a crucial time. UNEP is promoting the transition to no and low emissions mobility in Africa and the Global South, to improve air quality and mitigate climate change. CITA plays a crucial role in this endeavour by promoting comprehensive vehicle inspection systems that ensure compliance with road safety standards and environmental regulations. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to cleaner, safer vehicles in Africa.

Day 1

· Keynote speeches and a roundtable discussion on the best PTI (Periodic Technical Inspection) models suited for Africa.

· Panel discussion on the institutional roles of UNEP, UNECA, the African Union, and UNECE in advancing road safety and vehicle quality.

Day 2

We explored practical strategies for transforming Africa’s vehicle fleet, focusing on emissions reduction and safety improvements.

The conference offered a unique platform for networking and collaboration. It showcased global experiences that could be tailored to Africa’s unique context and foster dialogues that could lead to life-saving changes in the continent’s vehicle policies.

With support from UN Road Safety Fund, and the European Union and the African Union, this conference was not just another event; it was a vital step towards meeting the UN’s 2030 vehicle safety targets. Participants got to walk away with new insights, strategies, and partnerships to drive forward change. For additional details, visit our website and check out the presentations.
