The 20th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF 20) took place on 24-25 February 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya. It succeeded a preparatory global online consultation among major groups and stakeholders held in November 2023, as well as the Regional Consultative Meetings (RCMs).

GMGSF 20 provided an open and participatory platform for civil society participation and served as Major Groups and Stakeholders’ preparatory meeting for the 6th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6). The theme for UNEA-6 was “Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.”

GMGSF 20 particularly provided an opportunity for representatives from Major Groups and Stakeholders accredited to UNEP to prepare positions, statements, and inputs to the UNEA-6 process, including formal meetings and negotiations under the Assembly. However, the Forum, as such, was also open to non-accredited MGS since it was a self-organized meeting. The Forum offered an opportunity for stakeholder representatives to engage in an exchange of views with each other, as well as with representatives from the UNEP Secretariat and interested Member States.

Traditionally, the Forum also featured an informal dialogue between UNEP’s Senior Management and Major Groups and Stakeholders ahead of UNEA-6, with the goal of presenting and discussing key points of importance identified by civil society.

The GMGSF was self-organized by the Major Groups and Stakeholders, facilitated and supported by the Major Groups and Facilitating Committee (MGFC).
