Event overview:
- Digital transformation is one of the keys to accelerating action at the speed and scale necessary for clean energy deployment and climate change mitigation. Amongst digital technologies, blockchain opens new solutions towards energy and climate targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. Well-integrated digital solutions can generate a significant impact on sustainable energy access and mitigation of the ongoing climate crisis that was far from being conceived in the past decades.
- This event builds upon a report “Blockchain for Sustainable Energy and Climate in the Global South: Use Cases and Opportunities” that SAF and UNEP will launch on the same date. The report provides a clearer understanding of blockchain solutions and policy implications for addressing energy and climate mitigation issues through case studies.
- The event kicked off with two keynote presentations from SAF and UNEP. SAF is a not-for-profit grant-making platform supporting blockchain education and outreach to empower communities to utilize blockchain technology for social good. UNEP shares its perspective to advance environmental sustainability through digital transformation. The second half of the workshop shared lessons learnt from the projects where blockchain is applied to clean energy and climate mitigation issues. Power Ledger, Climate CHECK and Open Earth Foundation highlighted the use of distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) for climate change mitigation and clean energy issues.
