COVID-19 and the Water Sector is a technical report and result of a project implemented jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the water sector with a focus on wastewater.

This report analyzes and describes ways in which the pandemic has affected the water sector, and how wastewater has the potential to act as a sentinel to detect the still ongoing and future pandemics. In addition, the report presents examples and case studies from around the world.

This report helps policymakers, governments, and potential donors to better understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the water sector, how to address the current gaps, and trigger future action, especially on monitoring and surveillance of wastewater.
