• Overview

From 18 to 22 August, the UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) co-organized an intensive training on methane emissions, detection and quantification, and mitigation opportunities to empower stakeholders in the Kingdom of Bahrain to advance methane assessment and mitigation efforts.

The event, hosted at BAPCO Energies, aimed to advance collaborative efforts to enhance methane accountability and transparency practices in the Kingdom. The training highlighted UNEP IMEO’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) and Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), while facilitating discissions on how these initiatives can enable mitigation based on credible data.

The Kingdom of Bahrain recently appointed a focal point for engagement with UNEP’s IMEO on MARS, and BAPCO Energies joined the OGMP 2.0 in November 2023.

The Kingdom of Bahrain is one of over 155 countries that have committed to the Global Methane Pledge, which aims to reduce methane emissions 30% by 2030. UNEP’s IMEO is a core implementer of the Pledge and exists to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to the individuals with the power to reduce emissions.
