What: In September 2019, 130 banks, in the presence of the UN Secretary-General, launched the first-ever global sustainability framework for the banking industry: the UN Principles for Responsible Banking. To mark the 1-year anniversary, a coalition of the signatories has described their experiences as they have taken the first steps to far-reaching change. Through a series of short videos and online stories, employees from the banks as well as members of the civil society groups that are informing the process talk about the progress that has been made so far both by individual banks and collectively by the coalition. They describe what the Principles mean for banks’ staff members in their daily work life and for their clients and customers.
In the year since 130 banks committed to aligning their business strategies with global goals such as the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals, the number of signatories has grown to nearly 200 banks that collectively look after the business of more than one billion customers around the world and represent around 40% of global banking assets.
