Description :
At present, more than half of the world's population resides in urban areas and projections indicate that this number will increase to nearly 70% by 2050, resulting in an additional 2.5 billion individuals living in cities. As urbanization rates increase, so does the urban building stock. It has been estimated that over 70% of the buildings that will exist in Africa in 2040 are still to be constructed.
Buildings and construction account for approximately 38 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions (UNEP/GlobalABC 2021), from which more than a quarter are due to materials and construction processes. Furthermore, the sector consumes 12% of freshwater and 30% of raw materials, and it generates approximately 20% of effluents and as much as 40% of landfill waste globally(WEF, 2016). The buildings and construction sector’s demand for natural resources accelerates climate change, and inefficient, unhealthy buildings negatively impact human health and wellbeing.
Emissions, energy and resource consumption of the sector are set to increase due to a growing demand for housing, buildings and infrastructure globally.
This event aims at creating awareness on the role of cities in decarbonizing the buildings and construction sector, and why multi-level governance is crucial to advance in the transition towards a low-carbon, high-efficient and resilient built environment
