The findings of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for 2022 have highlighted the imperative need for action on methane emissions, a potent but transient climate forcer responsible for nearly one-third of historical warming. According to the African Development Bank (AfDB)’s 2022 report, annual methane emissions (excluding livestock) are 4,7 million tonnes of CH4, equivalent to 160 million tonnes of CO2e. Oil and gas emissions are the highest (48%), followed by waste (35%), wastewater (16%), and coal (1%).
This imperative necessitates a concerted and well-informed effort, and addressing this obstacle is crucial to achieving a sustainable future. Global partnerships, such as the UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), have already stimulated action plans, regulations, and funding opportunities for emission reduction.
The primary objective of this event, organized by the AfDB, is to bring together experts, policymakers, and interested parties to discuss strategies, challenges, and opportunities for reducing methane emissions through plans for the launch of a fourth call for proposals on methane abatement under the ACCF, Global Methane Pledge, collaborative partnerships, and innovative mitigation techniques to contribute to Africa's pursuit of climate resilience.
