Nitrogen is essential for life, playing a crucial role in plant growth and food production. Despite its importance, the mismanagement and overuse of nitrogen, particularly in agriculture, have severe environmental repercussions, including air and water pollution, soil degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss. Various other sectors like energy, transport, industry, wastewater, consumption are also significant sources of nitrogen emissions.
Sustainable nitrogen management is integral to addressing the climate crisis, promoting biodiversity, and achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, the significance of nitrogen management often remains underrepresented in international environmental agreements and policies.
The Government of Pakistan, in partnership with UN Environment Programme, Global Partnership on Nutrient Management, Compassion in World Farming, International Nitrogen Management System, International Nitrogen Initiative, South Asian Nitrogen Hub and University of Agriculture Faisalbad is hosting the event: Sustainable Nitrogen Management: Collaborative solutions for climate action, environment and food security at the COP29 Pakistan Pavilion.
The event will explore the urgent need to optimise nitrogen use in agriculture to tackle climate change, reduce and reverse environmental damage whilst ensuring food security.
