UNEP is hosting a side event to showcase synergies between the BBNJ Agreement and other biodiversity related multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) such as CBD, CITES, CMS, and Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans. The purpose of this event is to demonstrate opportunities to gain efficiency in early action to implement BBNJ and support Member States to enhance a coordinated effort on conservation, restoration and sustainable use of marine ecosystems within economic zone and areas beyond national jurisdiction.
This side event is designed to demonstrate synergies across multilateral biodiversity commitments including increasing efficiency by supporting Parties to align actions on biodiversity commitments such as 30% by 2030, access and benefit sharing, and DSI.
The side event will highlight experiences of Member State Parties to MEAs and share perspectives on how best to achieve synergies between BBNJ and other MEAs, including the Regional Seas Conventions. The event will also provide information on existing resources that are available to support Member States on ratification and early action.
Expected outcomes of the side event:
- Enhanced understanding of synergies between biodiversity related MEAs and the BBNJ Agreement.
- Increased understanding on opportunities to increase efficiency in early action to implement BBNJ Agreement and support which UNEP can provide to countries on coordinated efforts on conservation, restoration and sustainable use of marine ecosystems.
