This is an official side-event to the Middle East and North Africa Climate Week 2023.
Description:
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world has witnessed raised temperatures, increased the intensity and frequency of extreme weather eventsIn addition, rapid urbanization in the MENA region has further led to heightened water stress, food insecurity, environmental degradation, among others, further exacerbating the risks of climate change on health and well-being of people.
The Arab region is home to diverse ecosystems, ranging from deserts, mountains, fresh water, forests, and marine and coastal environments, often in proximity to urban areas. Thus, it is imperative to devise nature-based solutions (NbS) and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to enhance climate resilience and ensure health and wellbeing of people in urban areas.
The overarching aim of this session is to emphasize the link between cities, nature, and health. The session will introduce the newly developed Guidelines for Urban EbA in the Arab Region, which provides practical examples and technical guidance for urban stakeholders on the mainstreaming of EbA.
