Organizer: UNEP
Description: This side-event features technical presentations on the key findings of the Emissions Gap Report 2024, followed by a panel discussion focusing on the following three critical questions:
1. How are countries progressing towards their climate mitigation commitments and what are the global trends?
2. What ambition levels will be needed from groups of countries in their next NDCs to maintain the possibility of limiting global warming to well below 2°C and preferably 1.5°C?
3. Are these ambition levels feasible, and what are the key opportunities to accelerate climate action now and as part of the next NDCs?
Presenters and panelists will include lead authors and steering committee members of the Emissions Gap Report.
Every year, the UNEP Emissions Gap Report provides a global stocktake of where global greenhouse gas emissions are headed under countries’ mitigation pledges, and where they need to be according to science. This year’s Emissions Gap Report focuses on how we can deliver global ambition levels aligned with limiting global warming to well below 2°C and preferably 1.5°C in the next generation of NDCs, due in 2025. It provides an assessment of sectoral emission reduction potentials for 2035 and looks at approaches for interpreting levels of national ambition and action that would be aligned with global needs.
