Challenges to the Implementation of Modern Technologies in Disaster Management

The UNEP Disasters and Conflicts Branch is hosting a new webinar: “Challenges to the Implementation of Modern Technologies in Disaster Management”. This webinar follows the webinar series looking at modern technologies (AI, IoT, Robotics & Drones) for disaster management.

The use of these technologies is revolutionizing the field of disaster management. However, to develop and implement them responsibly, it is necessary to understand the challenges and risks their use can pose.  All these technologies are empowered by data. This data and the ensuing algorithms create risks and challenges such as data governance.

The discussion will be led by Dr Miren Gutierrez, Mr John Bryant and Dr Jonathan Nuttall, global experts in this field. They will present their work on this dynamic area and provide you with a theoretical and practical guide on the key challenges and the responsible use of these technologies. They will look at the main concerns surrounding the use of these data-empowered technologies such as privacy, bias, human rights, data governance and other ethical and legal challenges to the developing and deploying of new technologies.
