Background

The recognition of green jobs is essential for environmental preservation and economic prosperity. Their sufficiency can be seen in their ability to support the development of sustainable practices and contribute to the restoration, preservation, and improvement of the natural environment across various economic sectors. However, challenges such as job displacement, skill gaps, and social inequality must be addressed through comprehensive social and labor market policies.

As a legacy initiative of the International Meeting of Stockholm+50 in June 2022, UNEP, ILO, and UNICEF have joined forces to develop a 'Green Jobs for Youth Pact'. ILO, UNEP, and UNICEF work with their member states, employers, workers organizations, and educators to tackle the youth and green jobs deficit based on three tracks: employment and entrepreneurship, environmental education, empowerment, and youth partnerships to make the transition to a low-carbon, circular, and nature positive economy.

The presented assessment reports examine the state of the green transition in Kazakhstan and Georgia, focusing on green jobs and green skills development through education and training programs.

The main goal of the assessments was to provide policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders with insights on how to facilitate the development of green jobs and skills in the country.

The assessment was conducted within the DKU-UNEP project “Sustainable Lifestyles at the Universities of Central Asia and the Caucasus,"  which aims to introduce sustainable lifestyles (SL) at the universities of Central Asia and the Caucasus to reduce the use of natural resources through a "net zero living" behavior pattern.

Objectives The webinar aims to:

• To inform interested stakeholders on the status of green jobs and skills development in two countries: Kazakhstan and Georgia.

• To get feedback and comments from working professionals in the field and facilitate engaging discussion on the topic.

Participants Universities, upper- and graduate-class students, job market analysts and other green economy-related experts, the private sector, civil society representatives from the regions of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, as well as international organizations, are invited.

The event will be held online, with simultaneous Russian-English translation and recording available.
