One Health governance in eastern and southern Africa

A fundamental tenet of One Health is the need to “break the silos” that give rise to ill-informed policies that only consider the needs of humans, animals, agriculture or the environment in isolation, rather than considering benefits and impacts, synergies and consequences for all sectoral, societal and ecosystem needs.

Governance structures determine if policymaking is siloed or uses a joined-up One Health approach. Capacitating One Health in eastern and southern Africa (COHESA), an EU-funded project, is expanding the use of One Health approaches in 12 countries focusing on governance, research and education, knowledge sharing and delivery. Implemented by national partners and supported by ILRI, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA AfriCenter) and CIRAD, baseline assessments have been conducted in each country to assess their current One Health status. This included mapping institutional relationships and their inclusion in One Health issues.

The short presentations will be followed by a general discussion where participants can bring in their own experiences and perspectives.

The webinar is hosted by the Community of Practice (CoP) on the Return on Investment of One Health to inform One Health investment planning. The CoP was created by the Quadripartite (FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH) in collaboration with CIRAD and the World Bank. It is part of the One Health Knowledge Nexus that brings together a wide network of people for engagement, knowledge exchange, learning, and dissemination to support the further advancement of One Health.
