As UNEP marks the fiftieth anniversary of its establishment this year, it is an opportunity to reflect on the past, and envision the future. The Science-policy interface has been at the center of UNEP’s work for the past 50 years and has played a crucial role in informing action, for example, platforms such as the global mercury assessment, which informed the development of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

As part of commemorating the 50th year, the proposed side event will raise awareness on the role of Science-Policy Interface in support of adoption and implementation of MEAs, specifically the Minamata Convention, reflect on past successes and consider the challenges ahead. It will also explore how science-policy interface issues can be further strengthened in the medium to longer term.

Science policy-interface will continue to be the core of UNEP’s work of tackling the triple planetary crises– climate change, nature loss, and pollution. In this proposed side event, panelists are expected to share views on strengthening the science-policy interface.
