• Overview

As part of the harmonization process of vehicle emission standards in the East African Community, Burundi has developed guidelines to support a Strategic Approach to Vehicle Emissions Management in the country. The objective of the guidelines is to support a common and strategic approach towards the implementation of vehicle emission standards in Burundi, for cleaner, lower emissions mobility.

As part of the national vehicle emissions management, a sensitization workshop was held on 30th July 2020 in Bujumbura to discuss the strategic approach. The activities were funded by the UNEP through the FIA Foundation support.  Fifty-two participants from the public, private and civil society sectors attended the workshop that was opened by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Trade, Transport, Industry and Tourism of Burundi

Participants called on the government of Burundi to continue with stakeholder sensitization on the impact of vehicle emission on public health, to align national vehicle emission standards with the regionally harmonized standards and provide the Burundi Bureau Standards with the necessary equipment to monitor fuel quality as sub-standard fuel would impact on vehicle emissions. Participants also recommended the acceleration of the process of harmonizing vehicle emission standards and regulating import of used vehicles by the East African Secretariat.  International technical and financial support from international organizations including from UNEP, was also highlighted as critical in the implementation of vehicle emissions management in the country.
