• Overview

Under the joint leadership of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Metrological Organization (WMO) a hybrid Consultative Workshop and Science Policy Dialogue on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) will be hosted at WMO Headquarters in Geneva from19-20 May 2025. The event aims to foster a shared understanding of the current state of SRM science and research while facilitating collective inquiry on this topic based on the latest scientific developments and information.

The two-day workshop will be co-facilitated with the International Science Council (ISC) and a consortium of global and regional partners including World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission and Science for Africa Foundations. It will feature knowledge-sharing sessions followed by a facilitated high-level Science-Policy Dialogue. The Workshop will bring together leading experts, researchers and policy practitioners working on SRM as well as UNEP Member States and international coalitions and organizations.

The main objectives of the Workshop are to provide space for international dialogue, knowledge sharing and exchange on SRM with a view to help build capacity enabling more effective and inclusive engagement. Consultative workshops and Science-Policy Dialogues are efficient mechanisms to update scientific information and promote collective inquiry whilst facilitating constructive debate on contested and controversial subject areas. The Workshop aims to inform and support UNEP and WMO on how it would consider this issue in the future and any subsequent work.
