Overview of Event
At this Global Technology Needs Assessments (TNA) workshop, country representatives from the 34 participating countries under the fourth and fifth phase of the Global TNA Project will share experiences with conducting and reporting TNAs and Technology Action Plans (TAPs), discuss the integration of TNAs into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and other national processes, and engage in focused dialogues on how to enhance collaboration and investments in technology and implementation in developing countries.
Background
Technologies are critical for our response to the climate crisis, and climate technologies play an integral part in national climate plans. Within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the role and importance of technologies have received clear and consistent support from Parties to the Convention for over 20 years. Under the Paris Agreement, this is articulated in the Technology Framework under Article 10, with its five key themes: innovation, implementation, enabling environment and capacity building, collaboration and stakeholder engagement, and support.
Since 2009, the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre and UNEP, in close collaboration with the UNFCCC Secretariat, have led the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded Global TNA project in more than 100 developing countries. Through the TNA project, national country teams develop their TNAs and TAPs for selected priority sectors based on social, economic, environmental, and climate criteria, guiding them towards the implementation of NDCs and NAPs to the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within the TNA project, countries also develop project concept notes targeted at financial and technical support institutions, aiming to bridge TAPs to implementation.
