This workshop is organized by WTO in collaboration with UNEP as part of the WTO Dialogue on Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastic Trade. The Dialogue was established to explore how the WTO and enhanced trade cooperation could contribute to domestic, regional, and global efforts to reduce plastic pollution. Co-sponsored by 76 WTO Members representing over 85% of global trade in plastics, its work is divided into three workstreams: cross-cutting issues (e.g., transparency, technical assistance, and international cooperation); promoting trade to tackle plastic pollution; and reduction to tackle plastic pollution.

Following a Workshop on promotion in cooperation with UNCTAD held in December 2022, this Workshop on Reduction will bring together delegations and invited stakeholders to review the extensive technical work developed in the past two years under this workstream. The workshop focuses on discussions around four key topics and related guiding questions provided in the Agenda. It aims to provide co-sponsors with the opportunity to review and summarize their technical discussions in support of deliberations towards "concrete, pragmatic, and effective outcomes"  by the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference scheduled to take place in February 2024 in Abu Dhabi.

The workshop will take place on 27 April 2023 between 10:00 am – 01:00 pm (CEST). It will be organized in a hybrid setting to facilitate the broadest participation.
