The Nairobi Convention Secretariat, in collaboration with the Office of the Legal Counsel of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN- ESARO), is organizing a regional workshop on Familiarization on the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement from 04 – 06 March 2025 in Mombasa, Kenya.
The workshop will be preceded on 03 March 2025 by a meeting of the Nairobi Convention Focal Points and one (1) expert from each country, nominated through an invitation from the African Union Commission. This meeting and the subsequent workshop are responding to the Nairobi Convention Decision CP11/3 regarding the acceleration of the ratification process of the BBNJ Agreement. The workshop will contribute to familiarizing participants from the region with the provisions, obligations and benefits of the BBNJ Agreement, assess capacity-building needs with a view to supporting eventual ratification, and strengthen the region’s and continent’s wider ability to articulate its needs and priorities regarding the BBNJ Agreement.
