• Overview

On 26 and 27 February 2025, UNEP wastewater team will organize a one-day Stakeholder Engagement Workshop focused on Capacity Building for Sustainable Wastewater Surveillance in Africa at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya.

This workshop, co-organized by UNEP under its “Wastewater Surveillance for Africa Initiative” and supported by the European Union’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), aims to strengthen regional capacity in wastewater surveillance fostering stronger public health resilience and a healthier environment.

Kenya is a key country for this initiative, which will involve diverse stakeholders, including government representatives, research institutions, biotech companies, and development partners, to co-design sustainable wastewater surveillance frameworks. Discussions will highlight innovative monitoring technologies, early warning systems for disease outbreaks, and capacity-building opportunities in line with One Health principles.

The workshop will also address the identification of capacity gaps and the development of strategies for reducing wastewater and nutrient pollution, improving socio-economic and environmental outcomes, and safeguarding ecosystems and human health across Africa.
