This workshop will convene key stakeholders from the UNEP and UN-habitat Lok Urai programme, including government authorities, water utilities, and representatives from sectors such as eco-tourism, fishing, and marine economies, to collaborate on improving wastewater and sanitation management for marginalized coastal communities in Sabah.
The discussions will address the challenges of sanitation provision in water settlements, evaluate existing policies, and identify actionable recommendations to improve wastewater treatment and reuse. The outcomes of this workshop are expected to contribute to enhancing regional economic activities, including waterfront development, eco-tourism, and sustainable fisheries, while tackling marine pollution.
With over 10,000 water homes in need of proper sanitation services, the Lok Urai programme focuses on creating sustainable solutions to preserve both community health and vital aquatic ecosystems. It is part of a 36-month project designed to tackle pollution, reduce disease risks, and reverse the degradation of coastal ecosystems. As part of the project, 200 treatment tanks were installed in the village, which has some 1,150 homes on stilts. The project is being implemented by UNEP, Action Caring Team Malaysia (ACT Malaysia), a non-governmental organization, and researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
