Fighting asbestos contamination in The Gambia
Project Summary
The project aims to strengthen institutional capacity with the view to implementing the BRS conventions, as well as prevent hazardous exposure to asbestos. The project has a regional focus and makes linkages to both the Basel and Rotterdam conventions. Specifically, the project will work towards identifying and monitoring of sites in The Gambia, where asbestos is found. The information gathered will be critical for the development of a national asbestos policy and the legal instruments required to address the problem.
Project Objectives
The project will undertake the following measures:
- Reduce the risk of asbestos exposure through inventory and clean-up
- Create a nation-wide inventory exercise to locate all sites where asbestos exist
- Develop the institutional structures that will prevent exposure and mismanagement in the future
- Perform workshops and consulting meetings
- Train and carry out outreach activities on the risks of asbestos to communities and stakeholders, including cross-border training with Senegalese communities, as well as outreach and training on the BRS conventions, asbestos inventory, collection, and disposal
- Develop of policy and regulatory frameworks
