This pillar aims to support the strengthening of national institutions in the environment and energy sectors, and the mainstreaming of environmental sustainability into national government, UN planning and policy processes, as well as in disaster assessment and early recovery efforts. UNEP Haiti also helps to link UNEP’s global agenda and priorities to the particular context of Haiti, be this linked to climate change, implementing multilateral environmental agreements or UNEP awareness raising campaigns.
UNEP’s national work has five main interlinked components, presented below and directly managed by the UNEP liaison office based in the capital of the country, Port-au-Prince.
Institutional strengthening & innovations – Enhance the capacities of Haiti's Government for environmental decision-making, coordination and implementation in line with national priorities and international environmental conventions.
Environmental Mainstreaming – Mainstream environmental sustainability into Government-led inter-sectoral development planning processes and UN Country Programming.
Access to Environmental Information – Ensure national institutions and stakeholders have access to the skills and knowledge to conduct research, collect information and implement collective environmental actions.
Environmental Education – Enhance environmental awareness for national stakeholders and different levels of society.
Disaster Assessment & Early Recovery – Conduct field-based assessments of the environmental impacts of disasters on livelihoods, human health and security and provide recommendations to national authorities on how to address them.
