Based on evolving environmental needs, the priorities set by the Government of South Sudan, and the availability of funding, UNEP will develop its portfolio of projects and programmes in South Sudan.
Below is a selection of the programmes that UNEP South Sudan is seeking to undertake in the future (in no particular order):
- A State of the Environment study of South Sudan through consultation and field-based assessment;
- Addressing illegal wildlife trade through institutional strengthening and Conservation of biodiversity;
- Promotion of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies;
- Wider stakeholder engagement in forest resource management and utilization through the up-scaling of community management of natural forests on communal lands;
- Proper management of municipal waste in Juba and other major towns through the development of policy and regulatory frameworks and public-private partnership in waste management and re-cycling.
- Integration of environmental impact assessments in humanitarian and development projects through capacity building and by including environmental concerns in development planning;
- Integrated water resource and wetlands management;
- Development and implementation of environmental improvement projects, including building resilience of communities to climate change and other natural disasters, such as floods, extreme weather and desertification;
