Global Outlook on Walking and Cycling Report Update

In Transport

Recognizing that actions to move towards zero emission transport have the potential to not only reduce emissions but also improve air quality, human health, accessibility and road safety, the UN Environment Assembly adopted resolution 4/3 on Sustainable Mobility in 2019 which supports efforts to “to promote the exchange of knowledge, good practices, lessons learned and opportunities associated with sustainable mobility.”

In response, the UN Environment Programme’s Share the Road Initiative will be providing an update to its 2016 report ‘Global Outlook on Walking and Cycling.” The report will focus on the African continent where both the modal share for active mobility (walking and cycling) and the number of road fatalities are globally, the highest. The report aims to highlight innovative policy as well as financial and technological solutions for promoting sustainable mobility. It will also provide governments in Africa with resources and technical support to deliver better streets and programs for walking and cycling.

UNEP will work closely with UN Habitat and the Walk21 Foundation and stakeholders from other UN Agencies, research institutions, private sector, civil society and relevant NGOs to support the development of the report. Member States are invited to take part in the online survey below that will be used to capture country-specific walking and cycling actions in preparation of the 2021 edition of the ‘Global Outlook on Walking and Cycling’ report.
