What is the Global EbA Fund?
The Global EbA Fund is a funding mechanism supporting innovative approaches to Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) for climate change. It aims to overcome barriers to upscaling EbA by catalyzing innovative and inclusive initiatives. The Fund fills resourcing and knowledge gaps with a thematic focus on innovation, encouraging creative solutions and partnerships within and beyond the traditional EbA community. By supporting catalytic interventions, it addresses research gaps, pilots innovative EbA approaches, engages in strategic policy mainstreaming, and incentivizes innovative finance mechanisms and private sector investment in EbA.
The Fund is co-implemented by IUCN and UNEP and funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection of Germany (BMUV/IKI). The Global EbA Fund assists target countries in implementing EbA measures to meet global plans and commitments, aiding communities in adapting to climate change effects. BMUV has committed EUR 40 million to the Fund.
GAN supports the Global EbA Fund in achieving its outcomes, particularly in mobilizing networks, engaging stakeholders, and disseminating knowledge to overcome barriers to EbA uptake. GAN connects information on EbA barriers, contributes to analytical paper development, and convenes regional networks and events to raise awareness and discuss solutions. Through regional stakeholder dialogues and events, GAN strengthens networks, engages new partners, and gathers evidence to overcome barriers hindering the wider uptake of EbA. A summary report from the regional stakeholder dialogues can be accessed here.
