There was a lot at stake when more than 35,000 climate experts, negotiators, scientists and hopeful activists attended the UN Climate Change Conference (Cop27) from 6-16 November in Egypt this year. The whole world looked on, eager to see tangible agreements on how to tackle climate change in a year that has seen record-breaking heatwaves across the Northern Hemisphere, persistent droughts in the Horn of Africa, and extraordinary flooding in South Asia.
At this year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), climate adaptation is set to be a major theme. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Adaptation Network (GAN) will be organizing or co-organizing the following adaptation side events:

São Tomé, 2nd June 2022 – The Government of São Tomé and Príncipe, in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), has launched a process to develop a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) to reduce the country’s vulnerability to climate change impacts.

Maputo, 24 February 2022 – The Government of Mozambique has launched a USD 6 million project to protect its coasts from the impacts of climate change through the restoration and conservation of nature.
With funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and support from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the project is drawing on the natural defences and buffers that coastal ecosystems offer against storms, flooding and saline intrusion.

December 2, 2021 - The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a new project to develop a National Adaptation Plan, aiming to strengthen the capacity of Nigeria’s government to plan and budget for actions that build resilience to climate change impacts.
November 30, 2021 – A new USD 6-million-project is building the resilience of urban residents of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, against the impacts of climate change, such as flooding, landslides and drought.
The project, funded by the Global Environment Facility’s Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and executed by the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority (KVDA), is establishing and restoring urban green spaces and installing rainwater harvesting systems to improve water availability for communities.
Climate change adaptation has been brought to the fore at COP26 as developed countries pledged billions of dollars to help developing nations and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) adapt to climate change. During the negotiations, nature-based solutions (NbS) were often heard as a key factor to be considered when developing adaptation strategies.
‘Adapting to climate change one conversation at a time’
On Tuesday 12th October, the UN Environment Programme’s Global Adaptation Network published a brand-new podcast to explore the best solutions and cutting-edge technologies for adapting to climate change.
In Resilience: The Global Adaptation Podcast, each episode showcases stories from people all over the world who are adapting to climate change in practical, creative and innovative ways.
From the EPIC-Asia Workshop occurring in May, eleven seed grants awarded for projects focusing on sustainability, climate resilience, and adaptation.
